Background

Mucin 1, cell surface associated (MUC1), also known as polymorphic epithelial mucin (PEM), is a membrane-bound glycoprotein encoded by the human MUC1 gene. MUC1 belongs to the mucin family, whose O-glycosylated proteins contribute to protective mucus barriers on epithelial surfaces. The MUC1 gene is located at chromosome 1q22.

MUC1 is normally expressed on the apical surface of secretory epithelial cells. Its expression is frequently altered or elevated in several cancers, including breast, colon, ovarian, lung, and pancreatic cancers. MUC1 can contribute to epithelial protection through interactions with pathogens and also participates in cellular signaling.

MUC1 has been reported to influence ESR1-mediated transcription and estradiol-associated growth and survival in breast cancer cells. It has also been described as a regulator of pulmonary innate immunity and inflammatory responses during microbial infection.
